鉴于高校社团已受到国家的高度重视,而且它对学生培养和发展影响的分歧意见也越来越成为社会大众讨论的焦点,本文利用中国人民大学的首都大学生成长追踪调查(BCSPS)2009-2011年的数据,对大学生参与社团和担任社团干部对毕业起薪的影响进行详细又严格的分析,利用代理变量、工具变量以及匹配等方法,充分验证了我们结果的稳健性。我们发现,大学期间的社团参与经历可以显著提高大学毕业生的起薪10%左右,且社团干部经历会进一步增加这一收入溢价。本文还从社团参与数量、社团参与时间等多方面考察社团参与的收入回报问题,发现适时适量参与社团对起薪的提高效果最好,过时过量反而会削弱其正向作用;社团参与对低收入水平的毕业生的起薪的增长作用更明显,而社团干部对中低收入水平的毕业生的起薪提高更有利。此外,本文基于中介分析的思想从人力资本渠道、信号渠道和社会资本渠道探究社团参与和社团干部的收入溢价的原因:社团参与对起薪的正向作用主要是通过增强个体社会资本而引起的,而社团干部的起薪溢价主要是因为社团干部经历提高了自身的人力资本。我们的研究揭示了加强“第二课堂成绩单”制度建设对我国高层次人才所起到的直接积极作用,同时对制定更精准、有效的措施发挥高校社团的作用具有较强的政策含义。
Abstract:
In view of the fact that university clubs has been highly valued by the state and the disagreement on its impact on students’ development have increasingly become the focus of public discussions, we study the influence of university clubs on starting salary of graduates by using the indicators of participation and being leader in university clubs. Our data are from Beijing College Students Panel Survey (BCSPS) 2019-2011, conducted by Renmin University of China, and the methodology we used includes OLS, proxy variable, IV, matching and so on. We find that, college clubs participation can significantly increase the starting salary of university graduates by about 10%, and the club leadership will further increase the income premium by about 7%. We also examine the return of clubs participation from the aspects of its number, time, etc. We find that, timely and appropriate participation will have the best result for starting salary, but excessive participation will weaken its positive effect; the clubs participation could increase the starting salary more for the low-income graduates, while club leadership are more favorable to the income increasing of the middle- and lower-income graduates. In addition, based on the idea of mediation analysis, we also explore the reasons for participation premium and leadership premium from the channel of human capital effect, signaling effect and social capital effect, and find that the participation premium is mainly due to social capital effect, while the leadership premium is due to human capital effect. Our research reveals the direct and positive effect of strengthening the construction of “transcript of second classroom” system on China’s high-level talents, and has strong policy implications for formulating more accurate and effective measures to play the role of university clubs.
